X-ray Induced Mutations in Spermatogonial Cells of Drosophila and Their Dose-frequency Relationship.

چکیده

INTEREST in the mutability of spermatogonial cells has increased in recent years, primarily due to the demonstration of an X-ray intensity effect on these cells in the mouse (RUSSELL, RUSSELL, and KELLY 1958; RUSSELL 1960). Relatively few mutation experiments in Drosophila have utilized these cells compared to sperm and spermatid cells, and no large scale dose-frequency study has been carried out on spermatogonia. Because of the implications to induced genetic effects on human immature germ cells, it seemed desirable to determine the dosefrequency response of Drosophila spermatogonia to irradiation. These studies developed as an outgrowth from experiments considering the possibility of reparation of X-ray damage (ABRAHAMSON 1961) and because very preliminary data (unpublished) suggested that there might be a falling off of the curve at higher doses indicating the possibility of cell heterogeneity; we therefore sought more information on this subject. This paper presents some of the data discussed in an earlier preliminary communication ( ABRAHAMSON and FRIEDMAN 1962) .

Gamma ray-induced mutations in Drosophila melanogaster oocytes: the phenomenon of dose rate.

RIOR to 1958, it had been generally accepted that radiation-induced mutation IP frequencies are independent of dose rate. This was based mainly on findings for irradiated spermatozoa in Drosophila (PATTERSON 1931 ; TIMOFEEFF-RESSOVSKY and ZIMMER 1935 j RAY-CHAUDHURI 1939,1944). In 1955, HERSKOWITZ and ABRAHAMSON reported that the frequencies of sex-linked recessive lethals induced in oocytes of...

Reduction of background mutations by low-dose X irradiation of Drosophila spermatocytes at a low dose rate.

A sex-linked recessive lethal mutation assay was performed in Drosophila melanogaster using immature spermatocytes and spermatogonia irradiated with X rays at a high or low dose rate. The mutation frequency in the sperm irradiated with a low dose at a low dose rate was significantly lower than that in the sham-irradiated group, whereas irradiation with a high dose resulted in a significant incr...

ON THE EFFECTS OF ARA-A AND ARA-C ON X-RAY INDUCED DNA LESIONS IN NORMAL HUMAN AND A-T CELLS: SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES.

A better understanding of the mechanism of chromosomal aberration formation could be obtained by using DNA repair inhibitors. Immortalized normal human (MRC 5 SVI) and ataxia telangiectasia ( AT 5 BIV A ) fibroblastic cell lines were treated with adenosine arabinoside (ara-A) and cytosine arabinoside (ara-C), both potent inhibitors of DNA dsb repair, alone or in combination with x-rays at ...

Invesitgating the Radioprotective Effect of Brewed Rosa damascene in Comparison with Vitamin E on X-ray Induced Chromosomal Aberrations in Human Peripheral Blood Lymphocytes Using Micronucleus Assay in Binucleated Cells

Aims: More people, for occupational and therapeutic purposes, is exposed to its harmful effects including chromosomal abnormalities every day. Radioprotective agents are able to reduce these kinds of damages through mechanisms such as free radical scavenging, donating hydrogen to damaged molecules and increasing activity of antioxidant enzymes. Medicinal plants which have been traditionally use...

اثر محافظتی سیتوکین SCF در مهار آپوپتوز ناشی از اشعه X در سلول های HL60

Background and purpose : Âpoptosis or programmed cell death is a process of cell suicide. Ïonizing radiation is one of the stimuli for apoptosis, acting through DNÂ damage. Ïn the present study, effects of X-rays induced apoptosis in HL60 cells, as well as the protective effects of Stem Çell Factor (SÇF) in inhibiting X-ray induced apoptosis have been evaluated. Materials and methods : HL6...
